Whoa Mag turns one: A thank you

I always say Whoa is not a blog – it’s a magazine. While it’s true, I am the solo creator of the publication, I use the pronoun “we” in all of “our” social posts and other material. That’s because Whoa Mag isn’t about me. It’s about us – the Women of Heart and Outdoor Adventure. And today is our one year anniversary. (Insert happy tears!)

In that year I haven’t said much about myself, but people have been wondering who’s behind the curtain, so to speak, so here you go!

Hi! I’m Hatie. I grew up in Northern Minnesota but I live in Chicago. That’s right, Whoa is housed in one of the biggest urban areas in the states! We’re nowhere near any mountains but we do have incredible freshwater and that’s what I’m all about. You may have seen my dog, Norah Jones, featured on the Whoa Instagram page. I joke that the pronoun “we” refers to me and the pup as she is always over my shoulder somewhere.

I started Whoa because all the outdoor publications I dreamt of writing for just weren’t covering lady athletes and adventurers like they should. I am AMAZED at the incredible people I have met over this year. I have developed amazing friendships and total friendcrushes on every woman I’ve interviewed. The outdoor community truly has the pleasure of being made up of some of the nicest, most genuine, caring and badass women on this planet.

And then there’s the audience. Whether you’re an armchair adventurer digging our posts because you’d never ultra-run (me neither!) or go skydiving, or you’re a seasoned adrenaline junky – Whoa is for you.

I cannot thank you enough for reading our stories, sharing your own and getting involved over social. You’ve told your friends about Whoa, written in asking for stickers, sent SO MANY words of encouragement and overall blown my mind with your love and support. This anniversary is about all of us – Happy one year, Whoa team!
